Eyes Open Doors: TBS Powers Biometric Security at Stollen Luzern

Behind the ice rink in Lucerne’s Tribschen district lies a high-security stronghold — the Stollen Luzern data center, operated by EWL. Built into a former civil defense bunker, the site now hosts up to 600 server racks across 1,640 square meters of fortified IT space. And from the first door to the last rack, it is all secured by Touchless Biometric Systems (TBS).

We are proud that our iris recognition technology — with liveness detection and seamless user experience — has been spotlighted by Luzerner Zeitung. Edwin Ebbing, Sales Manager at EWL, explains: “With the TBS access system, among other things, we offer the highest level of security here.” One by one, users step into the airlock, present their iris to the scanner, and unlock access — 24/7, no badges required. “There is a scanner at every door, and even each rack opens with the iris. We do not need badges. In my opinion, it is the safest and best system, because the eye hardly changes over a lifetime — and you always have it with you,” he adds with a smile.

TBS stands apart because we do not just offer a device — we deliver the entire ecosystem. As Daniel Kohler, Chairman of the Board, puts it: “We are one of the few full-solution providers. We manufacture the devices and the software.” This vertical integration means unmatched flexibility. “With our software developed in Europe, we are far ahead of Asian competitors in terms of architecture, security, flexibility, and user interface.

The system integrates directly with platforms from major global security providers like Siemens, or dormakaba. “Over the last ten years, we have built a strong platform that lets us integrate our solutions into large security systems,” Daniel Kohler adds.

Security at TBS is multi-layered. Daniel Kohler explains: “Even if the heavily encrypted database were hacked, the data — which is never stored in raw form — would be useless. Our devices are also well protected against known spoofing methods or photos thanks to liveness detection.

TBS now has over 5,000 installations worldwide, trusted by more than 80 partners and high-profile clients — from Changi Airport Singapore to the U.S. Department of Defense. And with every new deployment, we push biometrics forward.

The trend is clearly heading toward comfort and speed. Ideally, the person should not even have to stop to be recognized,” says Daniel Kohler. That is exactly the future we are building.
